WHITWORTH VICTORIOUS IN HUMBOLDT SPEEDWAY THRILLER!
by Scott Lee Stewart
With all the improvements made over the winter to Humboldt Speedway, track conditions are wicked fast, and the "Track that Action Built" is hotter than ever.
Consider if youi will this weeks EZ Lock and Key B-Mod feature. After knocking off the off season rust last week, Riley Whitworth lead wire to wire to take a hard fought win in an intense duel with runner up Tim VanGotten and newcomer Shawn Springs.
While Whitworth had the lead start to finish, Springs and VanGotten dueled wheel to wheel for much of the contest close behind him. Once VanGotten wrestled the spot from Spring's grasp, he set off in hot pursuit of the leader, and was closing rapidly when the checkered flag dropped. Close behind Springs was Bentonville, AR driver Matt Thompson. Dalton Kirk of Gardner, KS took fifth.
The Allen County Chiropractic Modified feature was won by Johnny Bone, Jr. of Pea Ridge, AR., who has become quite the crowd favorite at "The Hummer" in recent years. Bone sailed away early, but a terrific battle insued behind him as local legends John Allen and multi-time track champion Whitey Folk traded places several times in the quest for second place. Allen took charge of the position in the closing laps, leaving Folk to finish third. Ryan Whitworth finished fourth, Brian Bolin rounded out the top five.
David Matlock became the first repeat winner of the 2011 season in the Whitworth Construction Pure Stock feature, and his car bears the scars to prove it. Matlock fought a tough duel, including being caught up in a grinding collision, that saw his shed several body parts from the right side of his racer on the way to victory lane. Brandon Rowland of Pleasanton was second, followed by top five finishers Michael Aielo, Matt Habiger, and Toby Elbe.
Factory Stock pilot Jeremy Wilson didn't get much seat time in the 2010 season, he was busy serving our country overseas in the armed forces. It would appear that Jeremy intends to make up for lost time, however, as he drove a flawless race on the way to feature victory this week. Derrek Wilson finished close behind, Paul Snyder of Wellsville, Ks was third. Fourth went to Tim Phillips, Ed Muller was fifth.
